During this week, which is to remind us of the problems associated with the over use of antibiotics, it is worth mentioning to importance of probiotics. Consuming probiotics and prebiotics helps to strengthen the immune system and, therefore, the need will be lessened for antibiotic.
Much research is showing the benefits of fermented foods such as:-
Boosting the immune system
Helping inflammatory disorders
Detoxify the body
Help fight Cancer
Beneficial to mood and mental health
By consuming a wide variety of probiotics via kombucha, kefir and fermented vegetables we are helping to proliferate the gut with “good” bacteria. Within these foods there is a wide variety of “good” bacterial and the more strains we consume the better. As an example live cultured yogurt, whilst still good for us, has approximately 7 different strains of bacteria, whereas kefir, similar to yogurt, has 20 to 30 different strains.
Another way to help in this process is to consume prebiotics. These are fibres found naturally in food which cannot be absorbed or broken down by the body and therefore serve as a great food source for probiotics. They include many fruits, vegetables, bran, whole wheat, legumes, berries, sweet potatoes and squashes.
Eating prebiotics along with fermented food is one of the best ways of optimizing health.
